WHY TWICE PER WEEK AT THE START OF MY TREATMENT?

The reason that I like to have patients return twice per week initially is to ensure that the joint is able to be replaced back in situ before the surrounding tissues and ligaments have time to react and the healing process starts with the joint in the wrong situation. It also does not allow the patient to "get used to" the incorrect gait or posture, generally the patient has had the condition for some time and the body has learned to compensate. This can become an habit, if I correct the body only once per week then leave it for six days it will take a lot longer time for the corrections to take hold and the body to heal in it's true alignment. This is also a way of keeping the patient focused on the problem and not allowing them to slip back into old ways of "coping" with the problem. Generally it is only for a short time until the joint gets used to the correct situation and does not keep coming out of alignment. But as I say to my patients it is like looking at a 5 year old boy and saying that when he is fifty he will be bald, gray or have a full head of hair - every body is different and so is their healing time. Even members of the same family can have a vastly different healing clock. I have given up, a long time ago trying to guess how long it will take to get them right.

WHAT ABOUT SPINAL SURGERY?

Every now and again I have patients come and ask this question. A similar answer has been published in the Talk Back Magazine, which did some research sponsored by PPP it says that out of the 16million cases of back pain reported only 24,000 result in spinal surgery. In my opinion it has to be the LAST resort because the outcome is so unpredictable with some very serious and painful repercussions. . When you realise that the claimed success rate for most types of surgery is only between 60 ands 80% success, with 20 - 25% no better off and 10% worse off. (Figures vary from types of operations) Obviously the best result is to have a successful operation and no effects felt at all. But some of the downsides are that all surgery carries risks from reaction to the anesthetics, wound infections nerves damage resulting in either more pain or loss of feeling and even paralysis. Although these are extremely rare they do happen. The main reason for disappointment is that it has not improved. The Three main reasons are, wrong diagnosis, right diagnosis but at a wrong level, or the symptoms were mainly psychological in origin. But remember YOU have the final word. If you're not sure ASK.

SOME GOOD READING FOR BACK PAIN SUFFERERS.

There are hundreds of books about back pain and I suppose all are good in their own way. Depending on how interested you are in the condition and what condition you may be suffering from (if any). Although most books can be obtained from the local library, it sometime pays you to buy your own. Some books I recommend for reading (not necessarily for practising at home) are; Banish Back Pain By Roger Newman Turner (ISBN 1-85813-163-4) Osteopathic Self Help By Julian Kenyon (IBSN 0-7225-1467-0) Treat Your Own Back By Robin McKenzie (IBSN 0-9597746-6-1) . There are other books such as the Back Book obtainable from the Post Office and Should I have Spinal Surgery from Back Care, 16, Elmtree Rd., Teddington, Middlesex. TW121 8ST for £3.00 . Obviously there are many others, if you know of one you have read and can recommend please let me know and I will pass it on.

NAMMT stands for the National Association of Massage and Manipulative Therapists. Of which I am Chairman.

DO YOU GIVE TALKS?

The short answer is Yes. I have given quite a number of talks on both Remedial Massage and Manipulative Therapy and on Complementary Medicine as a whole. I do not charge for these talks but if the audience wish to donate to my charity which readers of this Newsletter will know is the Tiny Tim Centre, then that is OK. Talks last from about 30 minutes to two hrs (including a demonstration ) I generally get a cup of tea as well. But if your organisation, or some others you know, would like me to come and talk.
